The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced its decision to suspend the operations of Social Media giant ‘Twitter’. This was contained in statement issued by Special Assistant to the President (Media), Office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Mr Segun Adeyemi and circulated on Social Media Friday 4th June 2021.
According to the statement “The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence”.
The statement also revealed that “the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria”.
This development is however not unconnected to the decision of twitter to delete a twit from the handle of President Muhammadu Buhari, which according to the Twitter violated rules.
