Reactions have trailed the outcome of Tuesday’s Plenary at the Red Chambers of the National Assembly. Senate today Tuesday 13/07/21 considered the report of its committee on INEC which screened President Buhari’s nominees for appointment as INEC National Commissioners.
While the Senate outrightly rejected the nomination of Lauretta Onochie, it stepped down the confirmation of Prof. Sani Adam (SAN) on the recommendation of its committee on INEC which requested for additional time to undertake further legislative action on a petition against him.
According to a statement issued by Special Assistant on Media and Protocol to the Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial District, Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, the Senate had almost ruled with finality on Prof. Adam when Senator I. D. Gyang of Plateau North Senatorial District, where the learned silk hails from, raised a Point of Order drawing attention of the Senate to the fact that the committee did not disqualify Prof. Sani (SAN) but rather, stood down his nomination for further legislative action.
The Statement stressed that Senator Gyang’s Point of Order was upheld and the President of the Senate ruled giving the committee two weeks to tidy up the matter and report back to Plenary for consideration.
This timely intervention has provided a breather for the nomination of Prof. Adam (SAN) to receive just and fair attention by the Senate.
