The Indigenous Ethnic Youth Leaders of Nigeria has squarely blamed the federal government and its security agencies for the ceaseless and escalating Killings in Plateau and other parts of the country.
The group said the total failure, grave insensitivity and lack of compassion of the government and its security agencies to provide security for the people and the nation, has left the burden of security on the people who are already divided along ethnic, tribal and religious lines.
In a statement jointly signed by the group’s leadership – Comrade Nensok Gonet, Comrade Napuru Bassuo, Danlami A. Garba and David Otor Ogbu and issued to journalists on Monday 16th August 2021, the Indigenous Ethnic Youth Leaders condemned in strong terms the killing of Nigerians across the country, particularly the attack on Irigwe land which left 77 innocent people dead and the killing of 23 commuters who were said to be on a religious mission to Ondo State.
According to the group “It is unfortunate that the Federal government of Nigeria has failed in it’s primary responsibility of providing security for it’s citizens, by not taking serious approach to cope the security challenges in the country otherwise these deaths would have been averted. Our emphasis on federal government is because it controls the military and other security agencies in the country. It’s genuineness to cope insecurity in Nigeria would have yielded positive results”.
The group added that the creation of state Police will go along way to add value to the nation’s local and community security.
They stressed that “It is worthy of note that if the federal government had shown concern to the massacre of the indigenous Irigwe people two weeks ago where communities were completely destroyed leaving 77 people dead and many wounded, by showing concern and bringing the perpetrators to book. The Saturday attack on commuters at Rukuba Road wouldn’t have happened”.
They posited that “On this note we want to condemn the consistent killings of indigenous Nigerians across the country. Indigenous Ethnic Nationalities of Nigeria are people of both faiths (Islam and Christianity) and therefore we call on the federal government to rise to the occasion of uniting Nigerians across all beliefs, bringing the “bandits” and “Killer Fulani herdsmen” who are perpetrating coordinated attacks on our communities to book to avoid unnecessary transfer of aggression by mobs on innocent commuters”.
The group called on all Nigerians and Ethnic Nationalities across all faiths to be tolerant of one another, adding that “our religions shouldn’t be the barrier to our oneness, but collectively we shoul defeat the enemy of peace and the monster trying to plunder our nation into state” of anarchy.
They called on all indigenous ethnic youths of Nigeria to abstain from taking laws into their hands, but report any form of lawlessness and criminality to law enforcement agencies. They also urged security agencies to develop the required passion and compassion for the people and do their job with all honesty and sincerity.
Calling on youth leaders to sensitize their members on the need to be tolerant of one another regardless of our religious differences because we are bonded in one big family call Nigeria.
They also extended their call to religious leaders to uphold the tenets of truth as enshrined in their holy books and preach peace and love for the unity of our dear country Nigeria”.
“Let all our Indigenous Ethnic Development Association Leaders in Nigeria come together to confront the monster threatening the unity and collective existence of our people, as injustice to one is injustice to all.
They urged governments at all levels to be proactive on security issues in the country because it is their primary responsibility to the citizenry.
Calling on their members and all well meaning indigenous ethnic youths of Nigeria to support security forces to unravel any syndicate threatening the peace and unity of Nigeria.
