Court Orders release of Bayelsa Monarch, 2 Others

A Bayelsa State High Court presided over by Justice Timipere Songi has ordered the release of HRH High Chief (Dr) Selky Kile Torughedi, the Eyewie the 5th of Azuzuama Community and two others who have been in the custody of the Bayelsa State Police Command after honoring an invitation by the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police.

In a suit filed by his lawyer and 29 paged affidavit signed Robbinson Nweke Agoke on behalf of HRH High Chief (Dr) Selky Kile Torughedi and two others, suit No. YHC/127M/2021 with the Commissioner of Police Bayelsa State, Attorney General Bayelsa State and J.B Lockie (Suing as the presiding Magistrate of the Magistrate Court 1, Yenagoa) as 1st, 2nd and 3rd respondents respectively, the applicants’ prayers were granted as follows;

1. An order releasing the applicant forthwith from detention pending the determination of the substantive suit.

2. An order that the applicants are released on bail on self-recognizance.

It will be recalled that following his selection as the Eyewie the 5th of Azuzuama Community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, HRH High Chief (Dr) Selky Kile Torughedi and others voluntarily honored the invitation of the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State as law abiding citizens, where they were summarily detained. The detention of HRH High Chief (Dr) Selky Kile Torughedi sparked series of protests in azuzuama community who sought the whereabouts of their newly crowned Monarch who suddenly went missing for days, before they discovered that he was being held at the Bayelsa State Command of the Nigerian Police Force on charges including attempt to cause local war.
