The Nigerian Media Association NMA, Plateau State Branch has attributed the high level of brain drain of Medical Doctors exiting Nigeria to the what they have described as ‘the pervading insecurity across the land”. In a statement jointly signed by the State Chairman Dr Innocent Emmanuel and the State Secretary Dr Bapiga’an William Audu respectively, the association stressed in their own words that “As a matter of fact, the ongoing severe brain drain of doctors exiting Nigeria in droves by the day to other climes is also attributable in part to the pervading insecurity across the land which has further eroded the confidence of these professionals in the ability of the Government to halt and reverse this ugly trend. Doctors just as other citizens are not assured of the willingness/commitment of the Government of the day to safeguard the lives of doctors, their families as well as their property.”
They called on security forces and Government to genuinely commit to doing more to prevent further incidences rather than taking reactive approaches on issues that a little more mindfulness, sincerity and commitment could nip in the bud.
This is coming on the hills of continuous attacks on rural communities in Bassa and Jos North LGAs that has left hundreds kills and thousands displace. Just yesterday, Wednesday 25th of August 2021, Yelwa Zangam community in Jos North LGA was attacked overnight leading to the death of over 35 people, including women and children. The unfortunate incident sparked palpable tension in Jos, the Plateau State Capital leading to the reimposition of 24 hours Curfew in Jos North.
