Not-Too-Young-To-Lead-Initiative Hails National Assembly for Passing Electoral Amendment Act 2021

The Not-Too-Young-To-Lead-Initiative has hailed the National Assembly for passing the Electoral Amendment Bill 2021. In a statement issued by the Executive Director of the Organization, Mr Elvis Akpobi who is currently in Casablanca, Morocco where he is attending a conference, the group particularly hailed the Nigerian Senate and the House of Representatives for including the controversial electoral transmission of results clause, as well as approving direct primaries as the means through which political parties will select candidates for future elections.

Mr Akpobi noted that with this development, power will truly returned to the people across party lines and will allow their will to prevail over the influence of money which was the case in the delegate primaries system.

Mr Akpobi called on Nigerian Youths to ensure that they register their will by ensuring that Youths of proven character and capacity are allowed to emerge as candidates of political parties for future elections. He noted that by so doing, youths will be able to effect positive changes through the right means and will be carried along in decision making and policy formulation.

The Nigerian Senate had upon resumption of plenary on Tuesday 14th September 2021 adopted the conference committee report on the Electoral Amendment Bill 2021. Some clauses had created controversy across the nation, but following pressure from Nigerians, the National Assembly caved in and approved the electric transmission of results as well as the adoption of direct primaries as the means through which political parties would nominate candidates in future elections.
