Pregnant women have been advised to consult health practitioners before going ahead to take any medication or even the COVID-19 Vaccine. This is because when a woman is pregnant, she is at risk of contacting a lot of illnesses. This was made known by Nurse Blessing Dalyop Nyango while discussing the topic “COVID-19 VACCINES AND PREGNANCY” on a Special COVID-19 Awareness Camping brought by Comrade Friday Bako, with support from MacArthur Foundation and CITAD, aired on KT 103.9 FM on Wednesday 30th March 2022.
She noted that the COVID-19 Vaccine only increases the immunity of pregnant women rather than expose them to the COVID-19 virus. She noted that the vaccines do not cause any complications or miscarriages. Hence intending, expecting and lactating mothers can take the COVID-19 Vaccines.
When asked if there are differences in the severity of symptoms of COVID-19 for pregnant and nonpregnant women, Nurse Blessing Dalyop Nyango pointed out that the symptoms are more severe for pregnant women compared to non pregnant women, hence the need for pregnant women to also take the COVID-19 Vaccine.
When asked how a baby can be protected from an infected mother, she noted that the mother will certainly be isolated from the baby in order for the baby to be protected. She stressed that the vaccine does not in any way impede the growth of the baby, rather is provides immunity.
She further noted that the fevers most people experience after taking the COVID-19 Vaccine are side effects of the attempt by the human immune system to fight the introduction of a new substance, not symptoms of the COVID-19 Vaccine as wrongly rumoured.
She pointed out that the COVID-19 vaccine, like any other vaccine is administered to increase immunity, hence COVID-19 Vaccine increases the immunity of pregnant women and does not cause complications and miscarriage.
When asked if pregnant women can take the various doses like others, Nurse Blessing Dalyop Nyango informed listeners that pregnant women must always consultant their health practitioners before taking any dose of the COVID-19 Vaccine, especially if the woman experienced some side effects after taking the first dose, stressing that the health practitioners must always certify that it is safe for her to take subsequent doses before going ahead.
