The Senatorial Candidate for the Labour Party (LP) on INEC’s portal for Plateau Central Zone in the February 25th 2023 General Elections, Mr. Melchior Mukilama Gowon has protested the publication in the magazine allegedly used at the Labour Party Presidential Campaign rally held at the Rwang Pam Township Stadium in Jos, the Plateau state capital on the 20th of January, 2023.
The alleged magazine titled “A New Nigeria is possible” reportedly had the picture of Chief Garba Pwul SAN purportedly placed as the Senatorial Candidate of the Labour Party for Plateau Central Zone for the upcoming general election February 25 2023.
In the light this development, Mr. Melchior Mukilama Gowon has reportedly given the party three days to publicly renounced and correct what he termed in his own words as “mischievous publication/fake news particularly the picture of Chief Garba Pwul SAN which appeared on the program of event during the LP Presidential Campaign Rally in Jos, as the purported Senatorial Candidate for the party, which is false hood and not true”.
Gowon in a briefing with journalists in his office in Jos on Saturday 21st January 2023 pointed out page 11 of the program of event of the Labour Party presidential campaign rally held at Rwang Pam Township Stadium in Jos on the 20th January 2023 at 10am titled “A new Nigeria is possible” with the picture of one chief Garba Pwul SAN, as the Labour Party Senatorial Candidate for the Plateau Central Zone.
He described the development as “…falsehood and not true, a conspiracy against me, against the interest of the people of Plateau Central Zone”.
He noted that “it is My picture that is supposed to be there not that of Chief Garba Pwul SAN…”, adding that “This is simple; you journallists and every Nigerian listening to this Press briefing should Google the INEC portal and see the INEC final list of candidates nominated by the 18 political parties for all elections published and posted on 4th October, 2022 for the forth-coming 2023 general elections and you would noticed that the Senatorial Candidate for the Labour Party for the Plateau Central Zone is Melchior Mukilama Gowon, that is me and not one Chief Garba Pwul SAN”.
He expressed his disenchantment over the development, describing it as “…fraudulent, mischief and a calculated attempt to still his Divine mandate as the authentic candidate of the Labour Party for Plateau Central Senatorial Zone.
The Senatorial Candidate further stated that he has already discussed with his legal team and will take every legal step to stop and correct the falsehood which he said is an attempt to mislead his teeming supporters.
He further stated that “Consequently, I call on Labour Party Plateau State Chapter, the Mobilization Committee of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Rally 2023, and the National Headquarters of the party to take immediate steps within three (3) days from this press briefing to come out and renounce, and correct this mischievous publication/fake news particularly the picture and name of Chief Garba Pwul SAN at page 11 of the program of event which runs contrary to the INEC final list published on the 4th of October 2022 containing my name as submitted to the Commission by the Labour Party on the 17th day of June 2022.”
“Failure to do so will leave me with no alternative but to ask my lawyers to Institute an action in the appropriate court in Nigeria. I am GOWON, I go for one Nigeria. I believe that a new Nigeria is possible only when there is justice and not injustice. I also believe that justice brings peace but injustice brings chaos”, he said.
Melchior further stressed in categorical terms that he did not withdraw his legitimate candidature given to him by the LP to contest for the Office of Senator representing Plateau Central Senatorial District in the February 25, 2023 election and is not contemplating doing so anytime.
Mr Melchior Mukilama Gowon, while responding to questions raised by the journalist on the current state of event of trying to mischievously skimmed him out said he has received threats from the Chairman of the Labour Party plateau state Mrs Grace Zamfara ”On Thursday the 13th day of October 2022 at about 1.40 pm the Mrs Zamfara called me intimidating and threatening me to withdraw as the candidate of the Labour Party for the seat of the Senator representing Plateau Central Senatorial Zone of Plateau State for her preferred candidate or risk suffering like Margif”.
According to Melchior “…this was the direct threat I received from her and I didn’t take it lightly so I told my Layer and we immediately took legal actions at In the Chief Magistrate Court of Plateau State, ln the Jos Judicial Division
Holden at Jos because my life is no longer save.”
He added that “As I speak to you Mrs Zamfara is currently is standing trial for Criminal intimidation punishable under Section 377 of the Plateau State Penal Code Law, 2017. So you journalists can see what is actually playing out, and is quite unfortunate Labour Party is build on equity and justice.”.
In conclusion Mr Melchior Mukilama Gowon called on all his teaming supporters to remain calm as all efforts to correct all the legality will be addressed appropriately in due time, adding in his own words “…may Justice which brings peace rule in a new Nigeria.”.
