The gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Barrister Caleb Mutfwang has promised to take on the mining sector head-on in order to ensure that the Plateau people benefit from the sector in such a way that their safety is guaranteed and government gets taxes from mining activities.
Mutfwang disclosed this while answering questions drawn from his manifesto at the 2023 Plateau Gubernatorial Debate organized by the Plateau Debate Guild, held at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) Kuru.

He maintained that his administration will ensure that host Communities where mining activities are taking place are not shortchanged in the sharing of proceeds of the mining of minerals in the State.
He promised to set up a supervisory mechanism to ensure safety of miners and address concerns of the mining sector. He stressed that the recent sad news of the loss of lives at a mining site Nunkung in Barkin Ladi is a reminder of the need to ensure that safety concerns, labour laws around the mining sector are adhered to strictly to minimize recurrence of such hazards.

Mutfwang had made the same promise earlier in the day, when he was accompanied by his Deputy Mrs Josephine Piyo, Director General of the Atiku-Okowa/Mutfwang-Piyo Hon Letep Dabang, Senator I. D Gyang and other member of the Campaign Council at a town hall meeting with critical stakeholders, civil society, professional bodies and trade unions resident in Barkin Ladi LGA, in continuation of his campaign activities across the 17 LGAs of Plateau State. A minute silence was observed for the soups of those who lost their lives at the mining site in Nunkung, Barkin Ladi LGA.
