Youths Protest over INEC’s refusal to Declare the Results of February 25th 2023 Plateau Central Senatorial Election

Youths in Plateau State protested the delay in the announcement of the February 25th 2023 Senatorial Elections for Plateau Central Senatorial District.

They youth have come out in their numbers to protest, following the inability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare the winner for the Plateau Central Senatorial election seven days after the election was concluded.

The protest had Youths loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party and other angry youths who came out in their numbers in the early hours of Saturday 4th March at the INEC State office in Jos.

The youths were wielding placards with different inscription calling for the immediate release of the result which according to them is in favour of the PDP Senatorial Candidate, Amb. Golkuna Gotum.

Addressing the protesting Youths, Na’ankin Mathew Dafoum on behalf of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and Comr. Nanswa Sargwak, the Chairman, Joint Campus Council of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) said the youths were gathered to press home their dissatisfaction with INEC over the continuous delay in the announcement of the result of the Plateau Central Senatorial election.

In their own words they stated thus “We call on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to declare Hon. Golkuna Yohana Gotum as the winner for the Plateau Central Senatorial election as it is obvious that he won the election of the 25th February with landslide victory and have the indicators and our situation room report”.

The PDP candidate, Amb. Golkuna Yohana Gotum had addressed Journalists in Jos on Friday 3rd March 2023 urging INEC to declare him winner of the election, saying that despite the irregularities in Kanam Local Government Area, he is currently in the lead in the results of the polls.

He lamented that days after the polls, INEC was yet to upload election results from Kanam Local Government into its server and called for the unconditional and immediate cancellation of the results of areas where there was over voting.

In his own words, he added that “INEC has the capacity to discharge justice, equity and fairness to Nigerians and in Plateau Central Senatorial District where elections were held on the 25 of February, 2023, I wonder the kind of election that will take 7 days for result to be declare.”

He further explained that INEC has announced the result for Plateau North and South Senatorial Districts and wondered why that of Plateau Central is being delayed days after the conclusion of the election. Amb GY Gotom is demanding that INEC declares him winner of the polls in the internet of justice, equity and fairness.
