Reactions have continued to trail the recent indefinite strike action embarked upon by the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Plateau State Chapter in Midnight of Sunday 27th August 2023, which according to the union was done in order to protect their members from what they described as “uncertainties created by the press statement issued by the Police high command…” Unsealing offices for the suspended Chairmen and Councilors to occupy, while appointed Transition Committee Chairmen were already in office.
In a statement signed by National Secretary of a group by the name “Democracy Advocates” Nentawe Danjuma, dated 28/8/2023 the group noted that “In view of recent developments across the 17 local government areas of Plateau State wherein the Police Command directed the reopening of secretariats for suspended local government chairmen to resume work, we wish to make a number of clarifications to this effect:”
“A. The many threats been directed at the NULGE President in Plateau State, Comrade Arandong Yohana Makwin is rather unfortunate.”
“B.That NULGE in Plateau State, under the leadership of Arandong Yohana Makwin only considered the safety of Local government employees before it declared the strike action.”
“C. Dragging the NULGE President into partisan politics is most unfair and unfortunate of any right thinking citizen.”
“D. Should the safety of Comrade Arandong Yohana Makwin be compromised in anyway, these blackmailers and miscreants will be held responsible.”
“E. The Police should as a matter of urgency, act in the best interest of Plateau State to avoid the crippling of Local governments and also ensure that nothing untoward happens to the NULGE President.”
The group appealed for calm among NULGE members and indeed all Nigerian civil servants resident in Plateau State.
